Wife of President Rutherford B. Hayes (1831–1889) and first lady from 1877 to 1881; a teetotaler, she later earned the sobriquet 'Lemonade Lucy' as a result of the Hayes administration's ban on alcoholic beverages in the White House. Appealing 4 x 8.25 cabinet-style photograph of Lucy Webb Hayes in a full-length pose by Sarony of New York, signed at the bottom of the image in ink, "Lucy W. Hayes." In fine condition, with some inconsequential surface loss to the reverse.
