Brother of American Express co-founder William Fargo, J. C. Fargo (1829-1915) served as a president of American Express for 30 years and pioneered the development of traveler's cheques. Partly-printed DS, signed “Jas. C. Fargo,” one page, 11.5 x 7.75, July 10, 1896. Stock certificate for 14 shares in the American Express Company issued to Hayden, Stone & Co., signed at the conclusion by James C. Fargo as president, and cosigned by William H. Seward, Jr., as secretary. A handsome certificate illustrated with a vignette of a watchdog, used by the company to symbolize trust and security. In fine condition. William Henry Seward, Jr. (1839–1920) was an American banker and brigadier general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was the youngest son of William H. Seward, the United States Secretary of State under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson.
