Soldier and businessman (1831–1916) who was a pioneering figure in military intelligence during the Civil War, who served as Ulysses S. Grant's intelligence chief in the Western Theater. In postwar years he was a railroad executive who helped direct the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. Partly-printed DS signed “G. M. Dodge,” one page, 11 x 7.75, October 31, 1883. Stock certificate for five shares in the International & Great Northern Railroad Co., issued to Grenville M. Dodge, signed on the reverse by Dodge, who authorizes that the shares be transferred to infamous financier Jay Gould. In fine condition, with light toning to the edges.
