Description

Partly-printed DS, signed “James N. Gamble" and "D. B. Gamble,” one page, 8.75 x 5.75, December 13, 1898. Handsomely engraved stock certificate for one share in the Little Miami Railroad Company issued to “Jas. K. & D. B. Gamble, Trustees,” signed on the reverse by both James Norris Gamble and David Berry Gamble as trustees, authorizing transfer of the share to David's son, Sidney D. Gamble. The front features a vignette of an old steam engine pulling on the line, and is signed below by company president Frank Jones. In fine condition. The Little Miami Railroad was founded in 1836 and was intended to run from Cincinnati to Springfield, Ohio. The Little Miami was the second railroad incorporated in Ohio, and eventually became part of the Pennsylvania Railroad.

James Norris Gamble (1836-1932), the son of James Gamble, co-founder of Procter & Gamble Company with William Procter, became vice president of Procter & Gamble and was the chemist who devised the formula for Ivory soap. David Berry Gamble (1847-1923) served as secretary and then as treasurer at Procter & Gamble before eventually serving on its board of directors until his retirement in 1920. Sidney David Gamble (1890-1968), the son of David Berry and Mary Huggins Gamble, was a Christian social worker for the YMCA who is best known for his remarkable and extensive photographs of Peking and North China.
