Description

Carter letter on "Habitat for Humanity" from 1991, handwritten on his old White House stationery 10 years after his presidency

ALS, one page, 6.75 x 9, White House letterhead, June 25, 1991. Handwritten letter to Charlie Guber, in full: “We hope you & your family will consider helping us provide homes for the homeless through Habitat for Humanity.” In fine condition. An interesting letter from Carter, who opted to write the letter on his old White House stationery a decade removed from his presidency.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit Christian organization founded in 1976 to help address poverty housing by partnering with families to build affordable homes using volunteer labor and no-profit, no-interest mortgages. Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter became involved in 1984, personally volunteering on construction sites and using his public profile to bring national and global attention to the cause. Along with his wife Rosalynn, he launched the Carter Work Project, which mobilized thousands of volunteers and helped transform Habitat from a small nonprofit into a worldwide housing movement operating in dozens of countries.
