Description

Einstein signs a photo for a member of the Intergovernmental Refugee Commission

Vintage glossy 10 x 8 photo of Einstein at a meeting with dignitaries, signed and inscribed in fountain pen, "To High Salpeter, A. Einstein, 51.” Reverse bears the credit stamp of "Edward H. Zwerin, Empire News Photos." In very good to fine condition, with scattered small surface creases, and some skipping to the signature and inscription.

High Salpeter's 1969 New York Times obituary described him as a civic leader, noting: 'He served on the Intergovernmental Refugee Commission, which rescued refugees from Nazi territory, including Albert Einstein, Enrico Fermi and Franz Werfel. Mr. Salpeter had been executive vice president of the American Friends of the Hebrew University and executive director of the merged fund-raising arm of the Hebrew University, Weizmann Institute of Science and the Technion of Haifa. In 1953 he was director of organization for the American Jewish Congress. He was a former president of its Queens division and had been a trustee of the Jewish Education Committee. As co-chairman of the American-Israel Music Alliance, he helped bring the Gadna Youth Symphony Orchestra of Israel to the United States on a tour.'
