Description

The Apollo 11 moonwalker visits his ancestral home—the Burgh of Langholm, Scotland, the traditional seat of Clan Armstrong

Program for the "Conferment of the Freedom of the Burgh" upon Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong by the Burgh of Langholm, Scotland, on March 11, 1972, 5 x 8, six pages, signed on the back cover in black felt tip by Armstrong. The introductory notice reads: "The Town Council have unanimously agreed to grant the Freedom of the Burgh of Langholm to Neil Alden Armstrong, in recognition of his outstanding achievements in the exploration of space, and of the courage, skill and leadership shown by him when, as Commander of the Apollo XI Lunar Expedition, he became the first man to set foot on the moon, taking mankind's first step on to another planet." In very good to fine condition, with staining to the lower right. Consignor notes that his parents were in attendance and had their programs signed; his mother was employed at the Langholm town hall.

Langholm, the traditional seat of Clan Armstrong, welcomed astronaut Neil Armstrong to the village and made him the first freeman and Burgess of the burgh. In a humble address, the moonwalker did not boast of his accomplishments but expressed interest in the Armstrong heritage: 'The most difficult place to be recognized is in one's home town. And I consider this now my home town…My pleasure is not only that this is the land of Johnnie Armstrong, rather that my pleasure is in knowing that this is my home town and in the genuine feeling that I have among these hills among these people.'
