Description

Admiral (1813-1891) who helped improve the Navy as the superintendent of the US Naval Academy after significant service in the American Civil War. Civil War–dated partly-printed DS, signed “David D. Porter,” one page, 7.5 x 9.5, May 18, 1864. As Rear Admiral, Commanding U.S. Mississippi Squadron, Porter, appoints Orlando W. Miles as "an Acting Master's Mate of the U.S. Mississippi Squadron, subject to the approval of the Honorable Secretary of the Navy, to have authority as Acting Master's Mate, and to be obeyed by all persons under him in said Squadron. This appointment to hold good during the pleasure of the Commanding Officer of the Mississippi Squadron, for the time being." In fine condition.
