Complete issue of the Connecticut Courant from December 23, 1799, 12 x 19.25, four pages, carrying an early notice of the death of George Washington, which was not widely reported in print until 1800. The notice is toward the bottom of the third page, in full: "Hartford, December 23. A letter from a Member of Congress dated 18th December, to his friend in New-Haven, says, 'The illustrious General Washington, is no more.' The time of death is not mentioned." The paper carries other news of events in France involving Napoleon Bonaparte and Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand, and the text of an act of Congress to "regulate Trade and Intercourse with the Indian Tribes, and to preserve Peace on the Frontiers." In fine condition, a few small stains and an ink notation to the front margin.
