Description

Flown metal fragment from the rocket that launched John Glenn and his Friendship 7 spacecraft, deriving from the personal collection of Bailey K. Howard, the architect of Fliteline medallions

Flown 1˝ x .75˝ piece of metal from the Atlas LV-3B rocket (Vehicle No. 109D) that launched the historic Mercury-Atlas 6 mission and carried pilot John Glenn and his Friendship 7 spacecraft into Earth’s orbit on February 20, 1962. The fragment is presented with a personal card belonging to “John H. Glenn, Jr.,” who has signed and inscribed the card in fountain pen, “Best regards to Stacy Ann – J. H. Glenn, Jr.” Both are affixed to a presentation sheet, which reads: “‘This material was recovered in Central Africa from the Atlas 109-D, which remained in orbit after launching Friendship 7 and America’s first orbiting astronaut on his flight February 20, 1962. While most of the launching vehicle burned during reentry, some pieces were unexpectedly recovered in Southern Rhodesia near the City of Bulawayo.’ Presented to Stacey Ann and Bailey K. Howard by John H. Glenn, Jr., May 19, 1964.” Encased in a heavy 9 x 10.25 x 3 Lucite block, which bears some light scratching, and a small shattered area, which in no way affects the Glenn item within.

Originates from the collection of Bailey K. Howard (1914-1974) a war veteran, media executive, and aerospace enthusiast recently identified as the architect of the legendary Fliteline Medallions, a sought-after mission-flown collectible whose numismatic origins had remained an industry mystery for decades.
