Explorer and pilot (1888–1957) who claimed to be the first to reach the North and South Poles by air. ALS signed "Byrd," one page both sides, 8.5 x 11, no date but circa November 1926. Handwritten letter to lecture manager James B. Pond, Jr., in part: "I am afraid you will lose a few dollars on the Minneapolis appearance—strange as it may seem—I don't want you to do that so you pay me whatever will enable you to break even. Because you are a good sport I won't allow you to lose on me. Everyone did all they could in Minneapolis—my lecture went over in great shape, but it must be that I am a poor drawing card, therefore my fault & my fault only.
The mayor told me I would have no crowd…The parade that was supposed to draw the crowd for me did not break up untill nine o'clock—that was tough of course, but I am not making any alabis. Here is a vitally important matter—have Rassman shoot me to Chicago, for my Chicago lecture tour movies of rough ice conditions Alaska way—conditions on the Polar Sea. Do this for me will you?…Send me please a new schedule of trains & hotels…Publicity is great—front pages wherever I go." In fine condition, with trivial loss to the upper left corner.
