Description

Union general (1824–1886) who distinguished himself in the Battle of Gettysburg and later commanded Custer and the 7th Cavalry against the Cheyenne in the disastrous 1867 campaign known as 'Hancock's War.' LS signed “Winf'd S. Hancock,” one page both sides, 5 x 7, Governor's Island letterhead, October 23, 1880. Letter to the chairman of the "Reception Committee" at Mount Sinai Hospital, in part: "Your noble building is a familiar object to me, and it would give me pleasure to avail myself of the opportunity to inspect the Institution which your invitation affords, but my engagements will not permit me to do so." In very good to fine condition, with a trimmed top edge and thin horizontal stains.
