Signed book: To Heal and to Build: The Programs of President Lyndon B. Johnson. First edition. NY: McGraw-Hill, 1968. Hardcover with dust jacket, 7 x 9.25, 506 pages. Signed and inscribed on an opening page in black felt tip, “To my dear friend Dick Russell, with appreciation, Lyndon B. Johnson.” In fine condition.
Although unconfirmed, the recipient may very well be Richard Russell, Jr., a longtime Democratic Senator from Georgia who was the prime mentor of Lyndon B. Johnson. It was Russell’s support for the first-term senator that paved the way for LBJ to become Senate Majority Leader in 1955. However, their 20-year friendship came to an end during Johnson's presidency, in a fight over the 1968 nomination as Chief Justice of Abe Fortas, Johnson's friend and Supreme Court justice.
