Letter to Robert Haller, in full: "Your choice of fruit raising for a living is, I think, one of the very best that any young man can make. I was engaged in it myself for ten years in the little Alhambra valley, three or four miles from the town of Martinez. That is a first rate valley for raising table grapes, although there are many other locations, with varied advantages for raising all sorts of fruit. If you wish to engage in orange culture, you had better go to Southern California, say Riverside or Redlands. There is not much farming of any sort in the neighborhood of Santa Barbara, although it is my favorite resort for tourists. Whichever branch of business you conclude to take up, I should advise you, after looking over the different localities, to 'hire out' and in that way learn the business. Then go into it on your own account." In fine condition, with a small stain, and toning from prior display.
