Description

Solemn gift box sent by Jacqueline Kennedy to close friends to celebrate what would have been her son Patrick's first birthday, also commemorating her late husband John F. Kennedy. The black lacquered box measures 4˝ x 3.5˝ x 1.5˝, with a sterling silver panel set into the life, carrying an affixed 1964 Kennedy half dollar; inside the lid is an engraved medallion, "To Carolyn, with many, many thanks, Patrick." Includes an ANS signed "Jacqueline Kennedy," one page on a black-bordered mourning card, in full: "Dear Mrs. Welsh—This small present is sent with my deep thanks and heartfelt appreciation for all you have done to help me." In overall fine condition, with some tarnishing to the silver.

On August 9, 1963, John and Jackie Kennedy lost their newborn son Patrick to infant respiratory distress syndrome just 39 hours after his birth. Having already suffered a miscarriage in 1954, and a stillbirth the following year, Patrick's death was an especially difficult loss for the first couple. An assassin's bullet would claim the life of President Kennedy just three months later.

The recipient, Carolyn W. Welsh (1911–1986), was the wife of Edward C. Welsh, who served as Executive Secretary of the National Aeronautics and Space Council (NASC) during John F. Kennedy's presidential administration.
