American politician (1860-1925), three-time presidential candidate, secretary of state under Woodrow Wilson, and one of the attorneys in the 1925 Scopes Trial. Fascinating TLS signed “W. J. Bryan,” seven pages, 8.5 x 11, personal 'The Commoner' letterhead, May 6, 1904. Lengthy letter to Texas politician John H. Reagan, commenting on President Theodore Roosevelt, his administration, and the best course of action for the Democratic Party to win the forthcoming 1904 presidential election. In part: “I fully agree with you as to the dangerous tendency of republican policies as exemplified in both the legislative and executive departments of the government, and I may add, as exemplified in the judicial department as well. I also agree with you that President Roosevelt represents those policies in their most aggravated form. His imperialistic ideas and his imperialistic methods, his refusal to enforce the law against men of great wealth who conspire against their country and its statutes, his subserviency to Wall Street and his willingness to mortgage his administration to the great corporations in order to secure a second term — these ought to lead to his defeat in the coming election. I might add what you have omitted. – namely, that to his other offences he has added a grave one in that he has done more to stir up antagonism between the white and black races than any or even all of the other presidents since the Civil War.” In very good to fine condition, with slightly irregular toning to the first page, and some minor edge chipping to the last page.
John H. Reagan was an American politician from Texas (1818-1905) who resigned from the U.S. House of Representatives when Texas declared secession from the United States and joined the Confederate States of America. He served in the cabinet of Jefferson Davis as Postmaster General. He later served as a Texas congressman and senator, thus becoming the only former Confederate cabinet member to sit in the U.S. Senate after the Civil War.
