Description

Nobel Prize-winning chemist (1912–1999) who was instrumental in the discovery of several elements, and developed the extraction process used to isolate the plutonium fuel for the second atomic bomb during the Manhattan Project. Handwritten manuscript in pencil by Glenn Seaborg, unsigned, three pages, 8.5 x 11, postmarked October 16, 1973. The manuscript, which bears Seaborg’s name stamp to the top of the first page, is a review of a scientific scholarly monograph. Seaborg writes, in part: “This monograph is a part of a series on Analytical Chemistry of the Elements prepared by the Vernadski Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry…It deals with the transplutonium elements with atomic numbers 95 to 104, inclusive and covers the literature through 1969…The title is misleading in that the monograph covers much more than analytical chemistry, to the pleasant surprise of the reviewer. The first chapter includes a brief account of the discovery of these elements, with some bias toward the Soviet point of view for the four heaviest elements whose discovery the authors feel is under dispute…Included is a discussion of the radioactive proportions…of the most important (about 25 isotopes) of the methods of production…Included also is a discussion of the solid compounds and their methods of formation…Chapter III is devoted to the methods of analytical determination-radiometric, chemical separation by ion exchange and solvent extractions…reactions with organic reagents…This monograph, with its 1020 references, would be a worthwhile addition to the library of actinide chemists and many other inorganic chemists.” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope from Seaborg at the University of California, Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory.
