Early partly-printed DS, signed “Grover Cleveland, Com'r of Deeds,” one page both sides, 8 x 12.5, June 17, 1859. Summons and complaint document from the Superior Court of Buffalo, New York, regarding a case between the plaintiff, The Clinton Bank of Buffalo, and the defendants, Josiah and Eli Cook, and John Pierce. Signed neatly on the reverse by Cleveland as the Commissioner of Deeds for Buffalo. In fine condition. Cleveland quit school to work and support the family when his father died in 1853. Two years later, he moved to Buffalo, where he lived and worked with his uncle and clerked for a law firm, where he studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1859 and, by 1861, was appointed as Commissioner of Deeds for Buffalo. An exceptionally early document from the 22-year-old Grover Cleveland.
