The queen acquiesces to the request of a petitioner, “John Howells of Merthyr in the County of Glamorgan,” recently arrested “on a charge of manslaughter,” to retain “Hardinge Stanley Giffard, Esquire, one of Our Counsel Learned in the Law to represent him at the said Trial.” Signed prominently at the top of the first page by Queen Victoria. The document retains its original off-white seal. In fine condition. Hardinge Stanley Giffard, 1st Earl of Halsbury (1823–1921) was a British barrister and Conservative politician.
