British mathematician, astronomer, and inventor (1792-1871) known for his discoveries related to the moons of Saturn and Uranus and for his pioneering work in early photographic processes, including coining the word 'photography' itself. Partly-printed DS, signed “J. F. W. Herschel,” one page, 6 x 4.5, September 2, 1853. Admission slip for a tour of the Royal Mint, signed at the conclusion in ink by Herschel as Master of the Mint. In very good to fine condition, with faint stains, a central vertical fold, and light show-through from small mounting remnants on the back.
