Description

Commemorative 'insurance-type' cover featuring a cachet of the STS-55 mission insignia, postmarked at Kennedy Space Center on the launch date of April 26, 1993, signed in black felt tip by Steven Nagel, Tom Henricks, Jerry L. Ross, Charlie Precourt, Bernard Harris, Ulrich Walter, and Hans Schlegel. Also signed and numbered on the flap by Schlegel, "Commemorative Crew Cover, CCC 6/13, Hans Schlegel." In very fine condition.

The crew of Space Shuttle STS-55 was the only crew who signed insurance type covers before lift-off, having them postmarked on the day of launch by family members at the Kennedy Space Center. Astronaut Hans Schlegel, member of the STS-55 crew and German mission specialist for the Spacelab in Columbia's payload bay, gave his family a limited series of 13 completely and carefully signed covers, which were handled properly at Kennedy Space Center's Post Office on April 26th, 1993. There are no similar covers known from other Space Shuttle missions. Hans Schlegel called them "Commemorative Crew Covers," and accordingly numbered and inscribed them on the flaps.
