Description

Al Worden’s personally-owned and -worn name patch from his tenure at the Ames Research Center. The black name patch, 4 x 2, features a silver design of NASA astronaut wings over capitalized text: “Al Worden, Ames Research Ctr.” The reverse bears male Velcro hooks. Includes a signed certificate of authenticity from Worden, which reads, in part: “I hereby certify that this Ames Research Center (ARC) Name Patch was used [by me] while assigned to ARC from 1972 to 1975. It has been in my personal possession since that time.” In fine condition. After the Apollo 15 mission and the subsequent Sieger cover controversy, Worden, Dave Scott, and Jim Irwin were removed as the Apollo 17 backup crew. Eager to remain at NASA, Worden accepted a position at the Ames Research Center, where he served as a Senior Aerospace Scientist, and from 1973 to 1975, chief of the Systems Study Division. He retired from NASA and the Air Force, with the rank of colonel, in 1975.
