Description

"Thanks for making the Odyssey sea worthy. We will bring her back in good shape"

Official color glossy 10 x 8 red-numbered NASA photo (S-69-62224) of the Apollo 13 crew posing in their white space suits against a celestial backdrop, signed and inscribed in black felt tip, "To: Dave Brooks, Thanks for making the Odyssey sea worthy. We will bring her back in good shape. James Lovell,” “Ken Mattingly,” and “Freddo.” Reverse bears "A Kodak Paper" watermarks. In very good to fine condition, with small creases, a faint stain to the left edge, and old tape residue on the back.

The recipient is ostensibly David Brooks, who, in 1963, began working at NASA’s Langley Research Center during the height of technology development for the Apollo project. He started working on plasma propulsion and later turned to orbit analysis for Earth observing missions. During this time, he wrote the first paper to analyze the potential for collisions with Earth-orbiting debris left over from launch vehicles and spacecraft. He performed the first calculations of viewing conditions for limb-scanning spacecraft — an analysis used by the original Stratospheric Aerosols and Gas Experiment (SAGE) spacecraft. In the mid-1980's he worked on data analysis for the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment and earned his PhD in Atmospheric Physics at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London.
