Description

DS, two pages, 8.5 x 11, March 5, 1959. Contract between CBS and Lillian Hellman, who agrees to appear as a panelist on an episode of the television talk show The Last Word, which is scheduled for March 15, 1959. Signed at the conclusion in black ink by Hellman, who adds her initials to one change of the text. In fine condition, with light edgewear.

Playwright Lillian Hellman signed this contract some seven years after her 1952 HUAC refusal and subsequent Hollywood blacklisting. Although she continued to write for the stage, she would make her long-awaited Broadway return with Toys in the Attic on February 25, 1960, which won the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play, and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play but lost to The Miracle Worker.
