Description

Brewer (1836-1904) who founded the company which, in the 1890s, introduced the 'Blue Ribbon' brand, the 'beer that made Milwaukee famous.' Partly-printed DS, signed “Fred Pabst,” one page, 8.5 x 3.75, July 23, 1884. Promissory note from the Phillip Best Brewing Co., issued to the Second Ward Saving Bank, with the former promising to pay $25,000 after four months "at their Ben King House with 7 per cent interest per annum after maturity." Signed at the conclusion by Frederick Pabst as president. In fine condition, with cancellation cuts and holes affecting the signature.

Pabst was the son-in-law of Philip Best, and having purchased half the company in the 1860s rose to be president of the corporation in 1873. By 1874, the Phillip Best Brewing Co. was the nation's largest brewer. Later, he changed the company's name to the Pabst Brewing Company.
