Description

United States Navy captain (1900–1966) who earned fame as the cartoonist who invented the naval character, 'Eggburt of the Navy.' Sketchbook filled with 35 original drawings by Earle D. Chesney, 9 x 12, labeled on the front, "As we go marching on!!?" Chesney fills the spiral-bound 'Co-Mo Sketch Book' with numerous cartoons satirizing military life, often portraying humorous interactions between men and women. Many are captioned with a one-liner, and two are signed in ink with his surname, "Chesney." Among the subjects are: a servicewoman getting "Butch" tattooed on her upper arm; a Navy hospitalman feeding a Korean child; officers seated on a couch, the man saying to the woman, "Can't we pretend we are enlisted personnel and have some fun?"; a military ball; an upside-down Jeep, captioned, "See what I mean—Jeeps have the biggest turn over in the Navy!"; an "Army Navy Club" scene; and a variety of other humorous scenes. In fine condition.
