Description

Vintage matte-finish 9.75 x 8 silver gelatin photograph of President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the White House trophy presentation ceremony of the annual President's Cup Race, with FDR shown seated and holding the impressive loving cup in his crowded Oval Office, signed neatly in fountain pen as president. Matted to an overall size of 14.25 x 12.25. In fine condition.

First contested in 1926, the President’s Cup Regatta became one of the most prestigious events in American powerboat racing. Founded through the efforts of William A. Rogers, who persuaded the Corinthian Yacht Club to host the race and convinced President Calvin Coolidge to sponsor the trophy, the event quickly assumed national prominence. Most races were held on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., near Hains Point, with a few early contests in Annapolis, Maryland. Traditionally, the winner received the trophy from the sitting President of the United States, a unique honor that firmly linked the regatta to the office of the presidency.

No president embraced the event more enthusiastically than Franklin D. Roosevelt, whose lifelong passion for sailing and water sports made him a natural champion of the President’s Cup. FDR took a personal interest in the regatta, lending it heightened visibility and prestige during the 1930s and reinforcing its status as a distinctly American sporting tradition.
