Description

Madame Kai-shek thanks an American donor during wartime—"Owing to the rising cost of living, and the decrease of contributions from America since the European War commenced, our Refugee Children’s Association has been finding difficulties in continuing to care for ‘warphans'"

World War II-dated TLS signed “Mayling Soong Chiang,” one page, 8.25 x 10.75, Headquarters of the Generalissimo letterhead, August 25, 1941. Letter to Leaton Irwin, in full: “Thank you for your generous gift of US$500.00 which I have received through our Embassy at Washington. The money has been placed in the War Orphan Fund. Enclosed please find a receipt. Twenty-five thousand war orphans are under the care of the Refugee Children's Association. These children have been brought from war areas into the comparatively safe regions of interior provinces, and while they are under our care and growing into manhood and womanhood, they must be fed, clothed, housed, and given an education. At the present annual maintenance cost of about US$50.00 for each child, your generous gift will help us to care for ten orphans for a period of approximately one year. For your interest I am sending you a few snapshots and an article on the ‘warphans.’ With warm thanks for your contribution and sincere appreciation of your interest and sympathy in the welfare of our suffering people.” Madame Kai-Shek signs with her initials, “M. S. C.,” after adding a handwritten postscript: “P.S. Your gift came most opportunely, for owing to the rising cost of living, and the decrease of contributions from America since the European War commenced, our Refugee Children’s Association has been finding difficulties in continuing to care for ‘warphans.’ Thank you.” In very good to fine condition, with some light creasing, and a short tear, to the top edge.
