Description

"Like you I am a lover of books, though my collection has run mostly to two specialties – the American Navy and the Hudson River"

TLS, one page, 8 x 10.5, Emmet, Marvin & Roosevelt, Counsellors at Law letterhead, February 7, 1923. Letter to Philip Henry of the Metropolitan Club in Washington, D.C., in full: “Through you and our friend Martin Vogel I have been given much pleasure in reading the old volume on Country Life, and it is naturally of close association to me in containing a picture of our view from Hyde Park – one which I did not know had been reproduced in this way. I am also glad to have your charming book plate. Like you I am a lover of books, though my collection has run mostly to two specialties – the American Navy and the Hudson River. I hope some day I shall have the pleasure of meeting you and of talking over what I know will be many points in common.” Matted and framed with a photo of FDR exiting a car parked in front of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool to an overall size of 23.25 x 15.25. In very good to fine condition, with light creasing to the right side.

This letter dates to the same month that Roosevelt sailed to Florida, convinced that warmth and exercise would help rebuild his legs. Roosevelt began experiencing symptoms of a paralytic illness in 1921, and by the time he wrote this letter, he was paralyzed from the waist down. He voyaged with friends and a small crew on a run-down 71-foot houseboat in February 1923, and while Eleanor found it dull and left, Roosevelt sailed for weeks, fishing and spending time with a succession of friends who came to visit. He even designed a pulley system that lowered him into the water to swim.
