Description

After her release from prison in October 1967—"I came out with the determination to make my next book as clear and beautiful as the music of Mozart, and as the prose of St. Exupery. A modest hope!”

American writer and political activist (1902-1992) whose work contributed significantly to modernist literature. Boyle and her husband, Joseph Freiherr von Franckenstein, were victims of 1950s-era McCarthyism. ALS signed “Kay,” two pages, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, November 3, 1967. Handwritten letter to author Ira Morris, in part: “Since my second stretch in jail I have much more to write, and as soon as I get things straightened out (papers, correspondence) I shall do a piece, and, of course, send you a carbon. The total loss of identity and dignity is the goal of the prison system, and it is devastatingly successful. Only, I must add, two good things (at least) did happen there: in my off-time from really arduous labor, I read a life of Mozart and re-read St. Exupery’s Night Flight. These books, as well as some of my own, were in the prison library! I came out with the determination to make my next book as clear and beautiful as the music of Mozart, and as the prose of St. Exupery. A modest hope!” In fine condition. Accompanied by the original mailing envelope, hand-addressed by Boyle. In October 1967, Boyle was arrested in a group of Vietnam War protestors (along with Joan Baez and her mother) for blocking the entrance to the Oakland Induction Center and served a ten-day sentence at the Santa Rita Correctional Institution.
