Description

"I want to thank you for the consideration shown the memory of the late President by your attendance at the Ground-Breaking Ceremony and luncheon reception for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts"

TLS signed “Bob,” one page, 8.5 x 11, personal letterhead, December 15, 1964. Letter to award-winning lyricist and librettist Alan Jay Lerner, in full: “On behalf of my family and myself, I want to thank you for the consideration shown the memory of the late President by your attendance at the Ground-Breaking Ceremony and luncheon reception for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The new Center will be a living memorial truly worthy of the President and of our nation. Your interest is most appreciated and your continued support will be invaluable to the success of this project. Again our thanks.” In fine condition, with a tiny ding to the top edge.

President Lyndon B. Johnson dug the ceremonial first-shovel of earth at the groundbreaking for the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on December 2, 1964. Excavation of the site started on December 11, 1965, and the site was cleared by January 1967. The first performance at the center was on September 5, 1971, with 2,200 members of the general public in attendance to see a premiere of Leonard Bernstein's Mass in the Opera House, some three days after the center's official opening on September 8th. The Concert Hall was inaugurated a day later, on September 9th, with a performance by the National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Antal Doráti.
