ALS signed “Fred A.,” one page, 6 x 8.75, The Brook letterhead, 1956. Handwritten letter to award-winning lyricist and librettist Alan Jay Lerner, congratulating him on his new musical, My Fair Lady, in full: “It is simply the best show that has ever been produced—as you well know. The writing is so great & my Ava and I were enthralled to say the least. Those lyrics are really something! And that music! I was crazy about all of the cast & of course carried away by Rex H. & Miss Andrews. What a treat!!!! We are off to-morrow for Europe. All best to Nancy.” In fine condition.
After its pre-Broadway tryout at New Haven's Shubert Theatre, and a preliminary four-week run at the Erlanger Theatre in Philadelphia, Lerner’s musical My Fair Lady, starring Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews in the lead roles, made its Broadway premiere on March 15, 1956, at the Mark Hellinger Theatre in New York City. It transferred to the Broadhurst Theatre and then the Broadway Theatre, where it closed on September 29, 1962, after a record-setting 2,717 performances. The musical was a smash hit for both fans and critics alike, winning six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Leading Actor, and Direction, and was later adapted by George Cukor for the big screen, where it won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Director, and Actor for Harrison.
