Description

French aviation pioneer (1901–1936) who made several heroic flights that helped establish an airline between France and South America; in the process, he became the first pilot to fly from Paris to the Pacific Ocean, finally landing in Santiago, Chile. He and his crew disappeared at sea on a planned flight from Dakar to Natal, Brazil, on December 7, 1936. Vintage fountain pen signature of Jean Mermoz, "Mermoz,” on an off-white 3.75 x 2.5 card stamped with an illustration of an airplane. Other signers include Léna Bernstein (the first woman to fly across the Mediterranean Sea), Jean Reginensi (killed in action over Tunisia in WWII), Andre Bailly (with Reginensi, set three world airspeed records in 1933), and one other. In fine condition.
