Description

Verne explains the plot of his final Baltimore Gun Club adventure, The Purchase of the North Pole—“This novel does not involve transporting the Earth into a warmer atmosphere, but only changing the direction of the axis by using the recoil of a mortar cannon, fixed on the equator and firing southward. This would lead to the shifting of the poles, the shifting of the seas, etc.”

ALS in French, one page, 5 x 8, June 2, 1893. Addressed from Amiens, a handwritten letter to an unidentified gentleman, regarding his adventure novel The Purchase of the North Pole or Topsy-Turvy, in full (translated): “I hasten to respond to your kind letter. The novel you are referring to is entitled ‘Upside Down,’ and it will be easy for you to obtain the English translation. You have been misled. This novel does not involve transporting the Earth into a warmer atmosphere, but only changing the direction of the axis by using the recoil of a mortar cannon, fixed on the equator and firing southward. This would lead to the shifting of the poles, the shifting of the seas, etc. You can see what the consequences of this carefully studied operation would be in all its effects. Please, Dear Sir, accept the assurance of my highest consideration.” In fine condition.

Published in 1889, The Purchase of the North Pole or Topsy-Turvy (French: Sans dessus dessous) was the third and last novel of the Baltimore Gun Club, a group that first appeared in From the Earth to the Moon, and later in Around the Moon, which featured the same characters but set twenty years later. The narrative contains debates on scientific understandings, geographical claims, and the implications of claiming the North Pole, all of which set the foundation for Verne's trademark blend of adventure and speculative science fiction.
