Description

American politician and military officer (c. 1773-75–1817) who served as the first governor of Louisiana and was also possibly the youngest member of the United States Congress in the history of the United States, although reliable sources differ about his age. Claiborne supervised the transfer of Louisiana from French to U.S. control after the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, governing the ‘Territory of Orleans’ from 1804 to 1812, the year in which Louisiana became a state. He won the first election for Louisiana's state Governor and served through 1816. Partly-printed DS, one page, 15.5 x 12.75, February 25, 1814. As Governor of Louisiana, Claiborne appoints James Raddye as a “Justice of the Peace.” Signed at the conclusion by Claiborne. The original off-white paper seal remains affixed to the lower left corner. In very good to fine condition, with small areas of minor paper loss, and toning and small repairs to the intersecting folds. Accompanied by an engraved portrait bearing a facsimile signature.
