Distinguished actor (1907–1952) who pioneered roles for African Americans on stage and in film; a vocal civil rights activist, he found himself on the Hollywood blacklist during the second 'Red Scare.' Vintage matte-finish 8 x 10 photo, signed and inscribed in fountain pen "To my sister Helen Martin from her brother, 'Bigger,' Canada Lee.” Stamped on the reverse, "A. Steiner, Photographer." In very fine condition.
Lee refers to his role as 'Bigger' in Orson Welles' 1941 stage production of Richard Wright's novel Native Son. Helen Martin (1910–2000) was an African-American actress who appeared in film and television as well as on stage. Her films include Hollywood Shuffle, Cotton Comes to Harlem, Repo Man, and Bulworth. She also appeared in the television series Roots.
