Description

King of the Netherlands, Grand Duke of Luxembourg, and Duke of Limburg (1792–1849); during his reign, the Netherlands became a parliamentary democracy with the new constitution of 1848. ALS in French, signed “Guillaume Pr. d'Orange,” one page both sides, 4.5 x 7.25, December 4, 1820. Handwritten letter to the Marquess de Trazegnies, wife of the Marquis de Trazegnies, head of the Orangist party, expressing disappointment at not being able to come to her home to meet a noted guest. In part (translated): "I thank you for your charming note and for the kind words you have kindly expressed to me. I deeply regret being deprived of the pleasure of spending the evening at your home. It would have been very pleasant for me to meet Ml. and Mrs. de Coigny there. Their amiable qualities are well known, and I would gladly seize every opportunity to meet them. It is therefore a real disappointment for me not to be able to accept your invitation. You must do me the pleasure of thanking Madame de Coigny for the kindness she has shown in offering to be the Princess's companion. We are both sorry that she is already leaving Brussels and we hope that, in the event of a future trip, you will be able to give us the opportunity to see her at home." Addressed on the integral leaf in William's hand, and also signed by the future king, "Pr. d'Orange." In fine condition, with some seal-related paper loss to the integral address leaf.
