Member of the House of Habsburg (1527-1576) who was Holy Roman Emperor from 1564 until his death; his policies of religious neutrality allowed peace between the empire's Roman Catholics and Protestants after the first struggles of the Reformation. LS in German, signed “Maximilian,” three pages on two adjoining sheets, 8.5 x 12.25, September 15, 1559. Untranslated letter signed at the conclusion by Maximilian II. Retains the original address leaf and separate paper seal, mounted to a larger sheet. In very good to fine condition, with light foxing and toning, and tiny holes at fold intersections (on touching the first letter of the signature).
