Description

"That business is so dead that the only thing I can compare it with would be running a Jewish newspaper in Berlin"

TLS signed “Joe,” two pages, 8 x 10.5, embossed Embassy of the United States of America letterhead, April 19, 1938. Letter to Arthur J. Goldsmith, a close friend from Harvard and business partner, in full: "You were nice to send the wire. You are so insulting most of the time that a note like this makes me feel you are not a half bad fellow, but, then, we diplomats are like that. You can also remember, when you are listening to the last of the Symphony concerts and operas, that Mr. Kennedy is making his plans to go to the opera here and attend the five Toscanini concerts, so there are many advantages in being a diplomat.

I certainly laugh myself sick when I think of you and Ordway working hard at that business you are in. Why, that business is so dead that the only thing I can compare it with would be running a Jewish newspaper in Berlin. Tell that mug Ordway that I haven't time to ring up that woman he wrote me about. She is probably some homely old dame he thinks it would be funny to have me meet. I'll wait until one of you gets here and we'll take it together.

At any rate, you are the best correspondent I have had since my arrival and I get a great kick out of reading your letters. Since you are not very busy, tell me some more of your opinions. I get the news. My best to Lou and yourself.” Kennedy adds a postscript: “I am enclosing a copy of a letter to Arthur Krock [Bureau Chief and columnist for New York Times], which I thought might be of some interest.” Includes the reference letter to Krock, an unsigned, six-page carbon letter marked "Private & Confidential" that mentions Hitler, Mussolini, and the economy of America and Britain. In fine condition, with a rusty paperclip impression to the top edge.
