Wife and biographer (1842–1933) of ill-fated General George Armstrong Custer. Signed book from Elizabeth Custer's personal library: Wake-Robin. Later printing. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1899. Hardcover, 5 x 7.25, 233 pages. Signed on a free end page in ink, "Elizabeth B. Custer," with a remarkable full-page autograph poem signed by John Burroughs on the first free end page. Burroughs pens five stanzas from "Waiting" on April 7, 1916, beginning: "Serene, I fold my hands & wait, / Nor care for wind, nor tide, nor sea; / I rave no more 'gainst time or fate, / For lo! my own shall come to me." In fine condition, with a numbered label affixed to the front pastedown.
