Description

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8.5 x 10.5, October 20, 1870. President Grant directs the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to “a Warrant for the pardon of Norman Davis.” Signed crisply at the conclusion by U. S. Grant. In fine condition, with some light creasing in the margins. Norman Davis, a 19-year-old from Hinesburgh, Vermont, was arrested for ‘robbing mail’ on August 12, 1868, and was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Fortunate for Davis, Grant pardoned him after an incarceration of a little over two years.
