Description

Garfield weighs the importance of Ashtabula County in his election as president: "I am more pleased with the behavior of the dear old District than with anything else in the campaign"

LS signed “J. A. Garfield,” one page, 8 x 10.25, Mentor, Ohio letterhead, November 17, 1880. Letter to Edward H. Fitch of Jefferson, Ashtabula County, Ohio, replying to a congratulatory note on his election as president. In part: "Accept my thanks for your congratulations. I am more pleased with the behavior of the dear old District than with anything else in the campaign. No man could have a nobler tribute of confidence than the majority that was given me by the District. Thank Little Peter for his fine translation of the German poetry I quoted." In fine condition, with an old tape strip along the back top edge.

James A. Garfield secured a crucial victory in his home state of Ohio during the presidential election on November 2, 1880. His strong performance there—which included winning 72.88% of the vote in Ashtabula County—helped tip the balance in a closely contested race against Democrat Winfield Scott Hancock. Ohio’s support was vital to Garfield’s overall win and reflected his deep political roots in the state.
