Description

British chemist (1927-2012) who worked in electrochemistry. The premature announcement of his cold fusion research with Stanley Pons, regarding excess heat in heavy water, caused a media sensation and elicited skepticism and criticism from many in the scientific community. TLS, two pages, 6 x 8.5, June 16, 1989. Letter to John Dutcher, in full: “I was delighted to receive your kind letter and I am sure the four leaf clover will bring us the good fortune which you have wished for us! As I have only recently returned to Southampton, I am very late in thanking you for this and I hope you will understand that it is the pressures of our ongoing research work which have caused the delay. I am sure you will have been aware of the very negative press which we received following the first phase of euphoria. Stan Pons and I are very pleased that this negative phase seems to be passing, at least in the USA. We are very actively continuing our work and we can see no reason for us to change our minds on most of the major issues. I am sure that the next few weeks will prove to be interesting and who knows, maybe the work we have done will even prove to be useful?” In fine condition, with light creasing to the lower right corner. Accompanied by a laminated four-leaf clover, a unique hallmark the original collector offered in trade for autographs.
