Uncommon 2.25 x 3.75 carte-de-visite photo of Bartholdi's study of the Marquis de Vauban, signed and inscribed on the mount in ink, "Vauban, To the grand attitude with respects, F. Bartholdi, 1871." Matted with an image of the Statue of Liberty to an overall size of 8.5 x 6.75. In fine condition. In 1866, Bartholdi was commissioned by the city of Avallon to design a statue of Sébastien Le Prestre, Marquis of Vauban, the celebrated 17th-century French Army engineer.
