Felt tip signatures of President Lyndon B. Johnson and Soviet Union Premier Alexei Kosygin on an off-white 4 x 2.25 card bearing a gilt-embossed presidential seal. The card is marked in black ink, “The Secretary of Defense,” indicating that this card may have belonged to Robert McNamara, and a notation to the bottom edge places the signatures to the “Glassboro Conference - June 23, 1967,” which aligns with Kosygin’s signature date. In fine condition.
Held in Glassboro, New Jersey, on June 23–25, 1967, the Glassboro Summit Conference was a meeting of the heads of government of the United States and the Soviet Union—President Lyndon B. Johnson and Premier Alexei Kosygin, respectively—to discuss and foster improved relations between the two countries. Although the meeting between Johnson and Kosygin yielded nothing of major import, the generally amicable atmosphere of the summit was referred to as the ‘Spirit of Glassboro’ and is seen to have improved Soviet–US relations. An uncommon union of American and Soviet Union signatures from a notable Cold War detente.
