Description

President Rutherford B. Hayes forwards the Treaty of Friendship and Commerce between the United States and the Samoan Islands in early 1878

Partly-printed DS as president, signed “R. B. Hayes,” one page, 7.75 x 9.75, February 8, 1878. President Hayes authorizes and directs the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to “the original and the exchange-copy of the ratification of the treaty of January 17, 1878.” Signed at the conclusion by Rutherford B. Hayes. In fine condition.

On January 17, 1878, the Treaty of Friendship and Commerce was signed between the United States and the Samoan Islands. Among its key provisions, the treaty granted the U.S. the right to establish a naval station in the harbor of Pago Pago on the island of Tutuila, in addition to the Samoan government granting the U.S. freedom of trade. The U.S. Senate advised its ratification with amendments on January 30, 1878, and the treaty was officially proclaimed on February 13, 1878. It was ultimately annulled by the Tripartite Convention of 1899, which partitioned the Samoan islands between the U.S. and Germany.
