Description

President Pierce ratifies "the Treaty for the Navigation of the Rivers Parana and Uruguay"

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 8 x 10.5, July 5, 1854. President Pierce authorizes and directs "the Secretary of State to affix the Seal of the United States to the Ratification of the Treaty for the Navigation of the Rivers Parana and Uruguay, between the United States and the Arg: Confed." Neatly signed at the conclusion in ink by President Franklin Pierce. In very good to fine condition, with some light stains, and old mounting remnants to the back of the left edge.

The 1853 'Treaty for the Free Navigation of the Rivers Parana and Uruguay' between the United States and Argentina granted merchant vessels of all nations, including the U.S., free navigation of these rivers within Argentine territory to promote commerce and immigration. It established uniform port regulations, protected neutral trade during war (excluding war materials), and aimed to prevent obstruction of navigation by any one state. The treaty also allowed other regional powers to join under its principles and ensured the U.S. would receive equal trade privileges with any other nation.
