Description

President Cleveland acknowledges the Emperor of Russia's announcement of the birth of a Romanov prince

Partly-printed DS as president, one page, 7.75 x 10, September 24, 1894. President Cleveland authorizes and directs the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to "the envelope containing my letter acknowledging receipt of the letter of the Emperor of Russia announcing the birth of Prince Igor, son of Their Imperial Royal Highnesses the Grand Duke Constantin Constantinovitch and the Grand Duchess Elisabeth Mavrikievna." Neatly signed at the conclusion in ink by President Grover Cleveland. In fine condition.

Prince Igor Constantinovich of Russia was born in Saint Petersburg on June 10, 1894, the sixth son of Grand Duke Konstantin Konstantinovich and Grand Duchess Elisabeth Mavrikievna. He would later be arrested with several family members after the Bolshevik seizure of power in October 1917, and executed on the night of July 18, 1918, the day after the murder of the Romanov family. Today, he is venerated in the Russian Orthodox Church as one of the 'Martyrs of Alapayevsk.'
