President Hayes sends his condolences to King William III of the Netherlands on the death of his son and heir apparent, William, Prince of Orange

DS as president, signed “R. B. Hayes,” one page, 8 x 10, July 28, 1879. President Hayes directs the Secretary of State to cause the Seal of the United States to be affixed to “the Envelope of my letter of condolence, in reply to a letter of 13th ultimo, addressed to me by the King of the Netherlands, informing me of the death of the Prince of Orange.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Rutherford B. Hayes. In fine condition. In fine condition.

The eldest son of King William III of the Netherlands and his first wife, Princess Sophie of Württemberg, Prince William was heir apparent to the Dutch throne from March 17, 1849, until his death on June 11, 1879. After a pair of failed marriage attempts, the disillusioned prince went into exile in Paris, where he threw himself into a life of sex, drinking, and gambling and shared his life with Henriette Hauser, his Parisian mistress. Prince William died at the age of 38 in his apartment in the Rue Auber, near the Paris Opera, from a combination of typhus, liver complaints, and total exhaustion.
