Partly-printed DS as governor and president-elect, signed “R. B. Hayes,” one page, 14 x 17.75, November 18, 1876. As Governor of Ohio, Hayes appoints Edward R. Shotwell as a “Notary Public, for the County of Morrow.” Signed neatly at the conclusion by Rutherford B. Hayes. In very good to fine condition, with a slightly rough bottom edge, and light offsetting of the masthead in the signature area.
A scarce document from Hayes's second stint as the Governor of Ohio, dated eleven days after winning the 1876 United States presidential election. He left the governorship on March 2, 1877, and took the presidential oath of office privately on Saturday, March 3, in the Red Room of the White House, effectively becoming the first president to do so. Hayes, a devout, honest, and principled man, who had earned the nickname ‘Old Granny’ for his attention to manners and his teetotaling lifestyle, opted for March 3rd due to March 4th falling on a Sunday. However, rumors persist that Hayes’ first swearing-in ceremony had occurred in secret because of threats made on the new president’s life due to the hotly contested results of the 1876 election.
